Las Peliculas!
Here’s what my eyeballs have been seeing and in some cases guiltily enjoying. These would be movies 9-14.
I finally watched the last two Bourne movies. They were actually quite intriguing. I think I delayed so long because I’m still scarred by the disappointment I had in the last two films of The Matrix trilogy.
Black Lightning, filmed in mother Russia and a blatant rip off of Spiderman, the Rocketeer, and even Kick Ass in some instances. However painful some scenes were, they were offset by ridiculous bouts of uncontrollable laughter as plot point after plot point failed to stick.
Bunraku I absolutely LOVED (so much so, that it needed to be capitalized). I’m always down for an underdog or pair of underdogs with dark pasts dripping with their own personal brand of honor taking down corruption with the help of Woody Harrelson. The sets were paper-like and reminded me of watching a play and Ron Perlman, well, he’s Ron Perlman and he’s epic.
Now to slow the pace with Out of Africa. I read the book several months ago and it was an interesting look into imperialized Africa pre WWII. I liked the movie, even if Sydney Pollack decided to focus on the clingy nature of the main character to Robert Redford (that is NOT represented in the literature), but it’s Meryl, so all is forgiven.
Eat, Drink, Man, Woman. Set in Taiwan and stoked in Chinese cultural norms and how they can change and be challenged. It’s a rather tame film, but enjoyable.
